Chessie on the left, and Meeko on the right. They're just in one of their fortresses, looking out. They are such suspicious animals.
The story is that a friend of my dad called, asking for a kennel. She told him she rescued the raccoons from a family who neglected them, after they lost their mother and brother.
What I can tell from what I read, the coons are at least eight weeks, still too young to be in the wild. The game warden who was with my dad's friend wanted to turn them out in the wild this early without learning how to survive. My dad stepped in, taking the babies in. There were five, the family killed one, and another male days later from dehydration. We tried to save him, but he was far gone. Another person wanted one male to foster.
For over a month now, we had Chessie and Meeko. They have gained weight, and we are teaching them on how to survive in the wild once they are old enough. The girl, Chessie, is named after Chester from "The Kissing Hand" books. Meeko is from the fictional pet raccoon in Disney's Pocahontas.
Caught this photo this morning during play time before packing for my next move. Enjoy!
